EC2 Managed AWS Geographic Expansion is the team responsible to build one of Earth's largest distributed systems - EC2 - at scale. We own the software and tooling to build the foundation of the cloud in new Regions and Availability zones and our team is growing to support a senior leadership strategic initiative.
AWS is the industry leader in Cloud Computing. We enable our customers to dynamically scale their computing capacity as needed. They sky is the limit! You will have the opportunity to implement tooling that interacts with a broad set of EC2 services ensuring we can build one EC2 at scale. We create the tools needed to deploy new EC2 in a fully automated fashion with zero human touch. This work requires innovative solutions for managing complex large scale deployments including configuration, service migration, dependency detection and management and more.

This position involves on-call responsibilities, typically for one week every two months. We don’t like getting paged in the middle of the night or on the weekend, so we work to ensure that our systems are fault tolerant. When we do get paged, we work together to resolve the root cause so that we don’t get paged for the same issue twice.

A day in the life
SDEs on EC2 Managed AWS Geographic Expansion balance their time writing / shipping code, designing new systems / components to solve complex technical / business problems, mentoring others, responding to operational events, and having fun!
We apply agile-scrum methodologies to our development approach with daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and retrospectives. Engineers have regular 1:1s with their managers to set goals and track career progression.
We work closely with every foundational AWS service teams including S3, DynamoDB, SNS, SQS, and SWF to deliver capabilities to enable zero-touch region build.
About the team
The EC2 Managed AWS Geographic Expansion team was formed 7 years ago to tackle the unique and complex technical challenges that arise from building new AWS Regions & Availability Zones. Many of the tenured Amazonians who formed this team are still on it today.
Our engineers enjoy the ability to work broadly across all the services that comprise EC2 and Dive Deep into the complexities of automating the instantiation of a massive distributed system.
We have fun with regular happy hours, AmA sessions, and team outings. We work as a team and support our collective learning and growth.
Basic Qualifications
- 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Experience programming with at least one software programming language
Preferred Qualifications
- 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
